? sam champion has tracking the spot. from battery park in lower manhattan. good morning to you, sam. >> good morning. we're right here with new york harbor behind us. we'll be able to see how wide this band of water is. any water that's at this shoreline will have to hop up over lower manhattan. a good flooding situation orfor this area. the hurricane center has the latest satellite picture. when you see the clouds are stretching from that south carolina area to georgia, all of the way up to maine and beyond into canada, this is a very large system. as a matter of fact, one of the largest storms that we have seen in the atlantic basin. take a look at the path here. hurricane center says it's still expected to get up and make a left-hand turn. we may expect to see movement turn toward the coastline as late as sunday night and then make the turn, the more direct turn on monday. tuesday, finding a home somewhere on the jersey shore, into new york city. if you follow the path. but look at that mile of wind path there. that's about a 1,000 miles of tropical-force to winds. on the jersey

overnight in what's being call the largest power outage ever. >> our front team is live. sam champion leads off the coverage from battery park in lower manhattan. good morning, sam. >> good morning, george and amy. forecasted to be a superstorm, and, boy, was it ever. a giant nor'easter, buttocked inside it, a very powerful hurricane. this storm lunged at the coastline, sped up and really moved onshore, pushing a wall of water, an incredible amount of rain and very strong winds. if you're traveling to the east coast over the next few days or if you're trying to clean up beneath the storm it is not going away. a quick look at where the storm will travel over the next few days and you'll find it in pennsylvania. through most of the day tomorrow, it's central new york state. finally it exits the coastline but to canada before it will work its way out of maritime. we still have tropical-force winds over the wind gusts, and we expect that will continue for the entire time that storm is onshore. promise to be a superstorm? take a look at sandy's punch. >> reporter: sandy's effects blasted new yor

said and stormed champion is reporting from lower manhattan about ready to be had. sam? >> reporter: sam -- diane i am standing water in new york harbor is over the edge and we are standing and it. this is just what are the just washed up and you know, before i came to abc news i covered new york weather for 25 years and i have never seen water in lower manhattan and there is water on the streets in lower manhattan. let's show you where the storm is going to make it smooth. once it is now i'm sure, let's follow this it is difficult to see where the center of the storm is that it is practically on the jersey shore line and the storm continues to be a problem once it is on sure. stepping into the pennsylvania border by the time we get to tuesday. since tuesday, almost it all day tuesday, i will spend a pennsylvania and wednesday, almost all day wednesday into thursday and western new york state, each one of those areas will have tropical storm wind gusts and heavy rain and flooding to be delivered with the storm and it was an amazing little surprise that sandy had in store for us at l

the east coast of the united states. sam has been tracking it all morning. sam, good morning to you. >> good morning, josh. the initial concerns of 16 inches of rain, not just for jamaica, but also for cuba and possibly haiti, as well. that's a real issue with that storm so let's talk a little bit. and the best way to show this is on the 3d view. watch the real development here just south of jamaica. you can see what we're talking about with those big towering clouds. now, let's talk about what steers it. this storm system is on track. there's nothing to move it away from going across jamaica, right over cuba. at that point, it's a hurricane. when it gets by, friday into saturday, about 200 miles off the east coast of south florida, what happens here? there's some concern that between that area of high pressure and this moving front, this thing do get steered very close to the eastern coast of the u.s. by this time next week, we could have a storm right in here and that is worth watching. and a lot of folks have to have their eyes on sandy. we'll have them there so you won't be surp
